Creating Sessions
Learn how to create and manage climbing sessions in Chalky.
What is a Session?
A session is one climbing outing: a couple of hours at the gym, or a whole weekend at the crag. It holds when and where you climbed, plus every route you attempted.
Creating a New Session
To create a new session:
- Open Chalky to the Journal tab (it opens here by default)
- Tap the + button in the bottom-right corner to start a new session
- Fill in the session details
Session Details
When creating a session, you can specify:
- Start time — When did you start climbing? Defaults to now
- Venue — Where did you climb?
- Discipline — Bouldering (indoor/outdoor), sport (indoor/outdoor), trad, ice, mixed, aid, free solo, or scrambling
- End time — Set when you finish the session; duration is shown derived from start and end
- Rating & energy — Optional 1–5 ratings for how the session felt
- Goals & focus — Optional notes on what you wanted to work on and what you'll focus on next time
Managing Sessions
Editing a Session
To edit a session:
- Open the session from your Journal
- Tap the pencil on the top-right of the session card
- Make your changes
- Tap Save Changes
Deleting a Session
To delete a session:
- Open the session from your Journal
- Scroll to the bottom of the page
- Tap Delete This Session
- Read what the delete takes with it, then confirm
Deleting a session also deletes every climb logged in it, along with their photos, videos and notes. The confirmation counts them for you. Photos and videos are removed from the phone and from any synced copy, and none of it can be recovered.
Session Notes
You can add notes to any session to record:
- Weather conditions
- Energy levels
- Specific goals
- General reflections
These notes become part of your climbing journal and can be searched later.
Next Steps
With a session created, the next step is logging the routes you climbed.
